Whether you are downsizing or just wanting to get rid of unwanted items, you may be considering having a garage sale before making your move to Omaha. Having a garage sale is a great way to thin your belongings out before moving, but if not executed properly, a garage sale can quickly turn into a disaster filled with stress and low sales. In order to help you pull off a successful yard sale and put a few extra bucks in your pocket, All My Sons Omaha movers have some tips for the do's and don'ts for people having a garage sale before a home move.
Tip #1:Accurately plan. Successful garage sales don't just happen on a whim. Pick a date that is far enough out to give you time to go through all of your belongings and recruit help. You will also want to check the weather to make sure your garage sale won't be rained out. If possible, plan on having the sale on a Saturday, so if items don't sell, you still have the option of extending your yard sale to Sunday.
Tip #2:Organize items being sold. If you have decided to have a yard sale before moving to Omaha, go through your entire home a week or more before your garage sale date. Place all items you plan on selling into organized piles. For example, all items from the kitchen should be placed in the same pile so it's easier to place them out on a table next to each other the day of the garage sale.
Tip #3:Price items ahead of time. It may be tedious to price every single item, but it will be worth it in the end. Garage sales can get hectic, especially if several people are coming up to you at once asking what the price of an item is. Pricing belongings will also make it easier for friends and family to help you sell because everything is already pre-marked.
Tip #4:Advertise. Post an ad for your garage sale on Craigslist or whichever local listing site is popular in your area the day before, and also make signs to put up outside the entrance of your neighborhood. Get the word out as best as you can about your garage sale, so you have more opportunities to sell your unwanted items before moving to Omaha.
Tip #5:Include your neighbors. Be sure to let your neighbors know when you plan on having a garage sale before moving to Omaha. Giving them a head's up will better prepare them for cars that may park outside their house, and also give them time to think about joining in on the garage sale fun. The way our local Omaha movers see it, two or three garage sales selling different items is better than one and draws more of a crowd.
Tip #6:Price your items to sell them. People don't go to garage sales for retail prices. Price items on the low end so people feel like they are getting a bargain. At the end of the day, it's about getting rid of stuff before your move to Omaha.
