Choosing a High School for your Child in Corpus Christi

One of the benefits of living in Corpus Christi is all of the educational opportunities that are available for your children. Corpus Christians put a strong emphasis on education, and they take it very seriously. From welding programs, to medical programs, to programs where you graduate high school with an associate’s degree, the world really is your oyster. The Corpus Christi Independent School District consists of five public high schools, and that isn’t counting the specialized schools. Each of the public high schools has their forte, and most of them have magnet programs.

The five public high schools are Carroll, King, Miller, Moody, and Ray. Carroll and King are the only 5A schools in the district, and they are all around power houses. They not only excel academically, but also in sports, and in extracurricular education activities like Challenge. Carroll and King are known for their strong AP classes, and the high percentages of students that pass the tests, along with their strong academics overall. These schools are not magnet schools, so you would have to live in their certain district to attend.

Miller has lower ratings in terms of academics, but their strong suit is their welding program. Students that attend Miller and go through the welding program actually graduate as certified welders. And in an industrial town like Corpus, that could be a career to get into right after high school. This is a magnet program, so you do not have to live in the Miller district to attend the school.

Moody high school has a medical program that prepares students for careers in the medical world. This program is one that you have to apply into, and if you get chosen you are pretty lucky. If your child is seeking a career in the medical world, this is a great option for them. It is also a magnet school, so you do not have to live in the district to attend.

Ray high school provides the International Baccalaureate program to its students. This is a program that you have to test into, and it is recognized internationally. Ray just recently implemented the program and it is growing stronger every year. The IB program is a magnet program, so you do not need to live in the district to attend Ray.

And then there is the community college Del Mar. Del Mar offers a program to a few chosen students each year that allows them to not only graduate with their high school diploma, but also with their associate’s degree. When students attend the Del Mar collegiate program they go to their high school and college classes on the Del Mar campus, and some classes count as credit for both. Your child has to apply to be in this program, and only a certain number of students are accepted each year.
