Boulder Colorado is one of the most popular destinations in the state. Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains Boulder offers wonderful scenery, a thriving sustainable urban center and access to a wide variety of outdoor activities. Boulder is also within an hour’s drive of the Denver International Airport and the Denver Technology Center, making it an ideal place to do business.
In the early 19th century, President Thomas Jefferson sent teams of surveyors and explorers west to chart the newly acquired lands of the Louisiana Territory. In 1805 US Army Captain Zebulon Pike was dispatched to explore the southern portion of the territory. Having lost their way, the Pike expedition found itself in Colorado. The Pike expedition surveyed the area and the famous Pike’s Peak is named in his honor.
The discovery of gold spurred migration to the state. In 1859 A.A. Brookfield organized the Boulder City Town Company which was to become the Boulder we know today. At the time Colorado was part of the Nebraska Territory. In 1861 when the federal government established the Territory of Colorado, Boulder was chosen as the county seat. As more miners and the shopkeepers who supported them moved to the area, Boulder began to flourish.
In 1861 legislation was passed to build the State University in Boulder, this was one of the most pivotal events in the city’s development. In 1874 ground was broken on the first building, Old Main, which still stands today. In the same year the first bank opened. Within a few years the population had grown to 3,000. By the late 1880s railroad service and electricity were available.
By the turn of the century tourism began to play a major role in the growth of Boulder. The Chautauqua resort was the first of many. As more plans were drawn up residents realized that tourism could be a mixed blessing. Concerned about over development and the damage to the natural beauty of the region, the city began an aggressive program of purchasing land for use as parks and open space. That tradition continues today with The Boulder County Open Space, which holds over 54,000 acres.
Through the 1950s tourism and Colorado State University were the main engines of growth. This began to change dramatically as companies like IBM began to move into the area, lured by the great environment, low price of land and the educated work force.
Today Boulder offers something for everyone. The amazing scenery of the mountains and plains, educational opportunities and a great environment for business. One of the things that makes Boulder unique is its focus on a healthy sustainable lifestyle. Boulder consistently garners top rankings as one of America’s healthiest, happiest cities. With a population of 100,000 Boulder offers the right mix of tourism, commerce and education to deliver one of the best qualities of life anywhere.
