On July 22, 1864, the Battle of Atlanta was fought during the American Civil War. Atlanta movers are proud of their city and of their history. All My Sons Moving & Storage Atlanta has over four generations of moving experience, and our moving crew is deeply rooted in Atlanta history. If you are moving to Atlanta, one of the first places that you should check out with your friends and family is the Cyclorama & Civil War Museum located in Grant Park, adjacent to Zoo Atlanta. Atlanta moving companies like All My Sons, know how important it is to feel at home in your new city, and one of the best ways to make Atlanta feel like home is by getting enriched in our history and culture - and that starts at Cyclorama.
The Atlanta Cyclorama is the largest of only three cycloramas in the entire United States, with the painting having a circumference of 358 feet, covering an overall 15,030 square feet, and weighing more than 10,000 pounds. The Cyclorama was painted from 1885 to 1886 and was donated to the City of Atlanta in 1898. The massive mural took three teams of painters to reach the scale of accuracy they aimed for. Bernhard Schneider, Wilhelm Schroeter and Franz Biberstein painted the landscape. Thaddeus Zukotynski, Theodore Breidwiser, Franz Rohrbeck, Herman Michalowski and Johannes Schultz painted all of the figures for Cyclorama. And Richard Lorenz and George Peter painted all animals. A collective few of the painters traveled to Atlanta to view the site where the battle took place, so that they could accurately capture and depict the true essence of Atlanta in their 358 foot artistic gift to the city.
In the 18th century, cycloramas were a popular way of storytelling. Today, we can think of the Cyclorama as an IMAX film from the 1800s.
Sharing the center with Cyclorama is the Civil War Museum and Steam Locomotive Texas. Artifacts from the Civil War era are displayed on two floors and include: weapons, uniforms, and photographs. Both floors feature touch-screens that tell the story of the war as guests make their way through the building. No matter where you are in the building, it is hard to miss the steam locomotive Texas. The Texas is a famous steam locomotive that played a major role in the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862; the Texas being used by the Confederate side to pursue and recover the General, which was stolen by Union raiders.
Upon moving to Atlanta, the Cyclorama is one of the most fascinating features to visit, and it is one that local moving companies and residents alike will recommend. Its life-size depictions of the Battle of Atlanta and the Civil War and its impeccable detail, will take your breath away. To this day, the Cyclorama is still the largest oil painting - and longest exhibit - in the world.
