Ways to Save Space When Packing Clothes
All My Sons Chicago moving company has been serving our Chicago customers for more than 20 years. We know moving can sometimes feel complicated, that's why we've created this list of 5 ways to save space when packing clothes.
Get Rid of Unnecessary Items
Moving is the perfect time to get rid of any unnecessary pieces of clothing in your closet that you haven't worn in years. You should go through your closet and create three piles: keep, throw out or donate. Determine if your clothes are outdated, out grown or even worn out. If anything is worn out just get rid of it! If your clothing is still in good shape and you think someone else would benefit from having it, take it to your local charity or Goodwill. Packing clothes will be a whole lot less stressful if you don't have a ton of stuff!
Leave Items in Dresser Drawers
If you are taking your dresser with you when you move, leave items in your drawers! By packing your clothes in your dresser, you will save space in the moving truck and this means you have to spend less money on purchasing packing products. Our Chicago moving company does not have a problem with moving dressers that still have clothes in them, but it is always a good idea to double check with moving companies about their policy on that.
Use Vacuum Sealed Bags
Vacuum sealed bags are the absolute best way to save space when packing clothes during moving. They're called space savers for a reason! All you have to do is fold your clothes and place them in the vacuum sealed bags. Then you seal the top of the bag off and attach the hose of a vacuum cleaner to the bag and suck the air out. In a matter of seconds, you will have thin bags of clothes that can be packed in boxes or suitcases.
Place Your Clothes in Garbage Bags
Garbage bags are the cheapest ways to easily protect your hanging clothes. All you have to do is cut a hole at bottom of the garbage bag and slip the hangers through. Then tie the bottom of the bag off, either in a not or with a rubber band. When you pack clothing in garbage bags you are eliminating big, bulky boxes that take up so much space. Soft garbage bags can be molded to fit just about anywhere.
Use Clothing as Fillers
Fun fact: clothing works just as well as packing paper! You can use any sweaters, sweatshirts, sweatpants as padding for the bottoms and tops of boxes. You can also use underwear and socks as space fillers in boxes to keep your belongings from moving during the move. The Chicago moving company suggests that it's also a good idea to stuff shoes, purses and bags with underwear and socks to ensure that they keep their form, and don't get crushed when being moved.
