Located in the middle of the bluegrass region of Kentucky, Lexington is the perfect mix of pastoral rural life and city sophistication.
The city we know as Lexington Kentucky was originally part of Virginia. Lexington was founded in 1775, in what was then Fincastle County, Virginia, almost 20 years before Kentucky became a state. That same year upon learning of the colonists' victory in the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the early settlers named their campsite Lexington. In 1779, the first permanent buildings were erected, establishing a settlement known as Bryan Station. The town was chartered on May 6, 1782, by an act of the Virginia General Assembly
By the 1820s, Lexington had grown to be one of the largest and wealthiest towns in the western frontier. It was during this period that the city earned the nickname “The Athens of The West”. John Wesley Hunt was an important figure in Lexington's history. He was a pioneer, merchant and banker. Hunt became the first millionaire west of the Alleghany Mountains. He was known for bringing the Messenger horse breed to Kentucky, this breed led to the American Standard breed. Lexington maintains this tradition of horse breeding and is known as the Horse Capitol of The World. His son Charlton Hunt was to become Lexington's first mayor.
In addition to Hunt, many luminaries of the time were associated with Lexington. This list includes U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and U.S. Senator, and Secretary of State Henry Clay. Lincoln's wife Mary Todd Lincoln was born and raised in Lexington, and the couple visited the city several times.
Today, Lexington is Kentucky's second largest city and the 61st largest city in the U.S. Through forward looking planning, the city center has managed to grow and thrive while maintaining the traditions of horse country. There's plenty to do in Lexington, of course there are many events related to horse racing and breeding, but the city also offers fine dining, shopping and theater. Lexington is one of America's most educated cities and hence attracts employers looking for skilled labor.
