If you are going to be a first time homeowner and you previously were renting, you may be shocked at how high utility bills for a home can be. If you are moving to Baton Rouge, local moving companies want you to be aware of some tricks to saving money on your water bill.
If you will be moving into a home, or currently live in a home that is older, your toilet may still be following the old standard of 3.5, 5, or even up to 7 gallons of water per flush (GPF); costing you a decent amount of money every time you flush. Newer toilets use, on average, 1.6 GPF. These toilets are called low-flow toilets, or you can also purchase a high-efficiency toilet that only uses up to 1.28 GPF.
However, if you do not wish to buy new toilets for your entire home, there are ways that you can convert your current toilet to a low-flow toilet, saving money on your water bill.
Put a plastic bottle in the toilet tank. Take a plastic bottle, fill it with water, and put it in the toilet tank. The bottle will displace water, allowing the tank to fill up with less water. Since the amount of water that you will save will be dependent on the size of the bottle…the bigger the bottle, the more water and money you will save. For example, if you only put an 8 ounce bottle in the tank, you will only save 8 ounces of water per flush.
Another area that you can cut down on water use, is in the laundry room. As with toilets, you can upgrade your washing machine to a high-efficiency one; which are three times more efficient than a regular washing machine. Some general rules to using your laundry room at its utmost efficiency:
Wash only full loads of laundry. Washing smaller loads will make it so that you have to run more loads and use more water. If you wait until you have a large load of laundry and only have to run your washer once a week, then you can help save a drastic amount of water and money, and also the life of your washing machine. If it is not dirty, consider re-wearing it. Certain items of clothing do not have to be washed after one use. If you wear a sweatshirt or jeans, you should consider wearing them two to three times before you toss it into the dirty clothes bin. For any other clothes that you may have worn for an hour or two, if you were not sweating in it, try wearing it again. Common reusable attire are typically pajamas.
Another way to save money on your water bill is by making your water heat up faster. How can you do this? Get the pipes in your home insulated. If you cover your hot water pipes with foam, you can prevent heat loss and your water will heat up faster, so you will not have to let the water run and waste gallons while waiting for your water to get warm enough to shower in.
