Keeping Kids Entertained During the Summer in Omaha

Typically when people think of summer and all of its greatness, their minds don't naturally meander to the idea of Omaha. People usually think Florida, or the Caribbean, or wherever their home is. Surprisingly though, Omaha has a ton of stuff for kids to do, and it is an extremely family friendly place. So next time your summer plans are up in the air, make sure to keep Omaha, Nebraska as an option. It's a pretty cool place.

First and foremost, there are tons of activities dedicated to the kids of Omaha, all for free. There are community events, family fishing events, hydrant parties, and all kinds of things that are free to the public. One of the bigger events that take place during the summer are the festivals. There's an Italian festival, there's an arts festival, an air show, and the College World Series even takes place in Omaha this year. Those are some of the many festivals that take place over the summer, among other things.

Another cool thing that the people of Omaha do is they have movies for kids that are free or next to free. Some are weekly at a local amphitheater, others are every other week at a park, while others are every Monday. Most of the movies shown are PG-13 and under, and it is free fun for the whole family to enjoy. And not only are there showing across town, they also have showings at different times during the day. So if that Nebraska heat is just too much during the day, many of the showings are in the morning and evening. The world is your oyster.

Another really cool thing that the Nebraskans do is called Nebraska's Great Park Pursuit, and according to familyfuninomaha.com it is, “A free outdoor adventure throughout Nebraska from 5/1-9/17, where participants can visit up to 20 local, state or federal parks. At each park, visitors follow clues to find the post and make a nature impression.Impressions are mailed in, reflecting the total number of parks visited. Entry into prize drawings are based on the number of impressions collected. There are a few near Omaha and Lincoln!” So if travelling the state of Nebraska is your thing, this should be right up your alley.

Then just for kicks and giggles you could visit the world's largest ball of stamps at the Boys Town Hall of History.

The Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha is a great attraction for families. For $15 per adult, and $10 per child, this place is definitely not on the list of free things to do in Omaha. Yet, it is still a great place to take the kids on a rainy day. It has all types of animals and exhibits, and for only $10 a kid, how could you not go on a rainy day?

Most people typically don't think of Omaha when making their summer plans. That should change. It's right smack-dab in the middle of the country and with tons of attractions for the whole family, many of which are free, why not take a trip to Omaha?
