Powell is an unincorporated area located in Knox County, Tennessee. Though not an official city, it is considered a populated place and part of the Knoxville, Tennessee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Powell is about a 15-minute drive north of Knoxville and a little less than 3 hours from Nashville. It was established in 1792 by Columbus Powell and was named Powell Station due to the railroad tracks that run through the heart of Powell's downtown. The station may no longer be in use, but the landmark still references the downtown.

The town had some famous footballers, including the ESPN college football analyst, John Cooper, plus the NFL tight end Lee Smith, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard, John Bruhin. Powell's economy first emerged from bricks made from the local Beaver Creek. As the Powell area grew, houses emerged. Some were believed to be used for Confederate hospitals during the Civil War. At one point, Powell had a rural airstrip, but it was annexed in 2013. This was when the Knoxville City Council approved a shopping complex that included Kroger supermarket, Regal Cinemas, and Kohl's department store. Today, Weigel's chain of convenience stores has its headquarters in Powell, and Powell's largest employer is DeRoyal Industries, a company that manufactures and markets medical products. The more famous Levi's jeans company used to have their manufacturing plant there as well, but the plant was closed down, and the location is now the site of Crown College.
Powell does offer several options for schools, including Crown College. It is a Christian College composed of five schools: ministry, business, education, science and healthcare, and trades and technology. Crown College also has a music conservatory and seminary. Its graduate school offers a Master of Education (M.Ed.), but it's their International Language Navigators program that distinguishes the college. The classes are designed to help Christians acquire the tools they need to spread their religious message. Upon completing their schoolwork, the students receive a certificate from the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). This certificate is internationally recognized and qualifies them in the following fields: teaching English to speakers of other languages, Phonetic Reading Specialist, and American Sign Language Interpreting.
