Important Documents to Update Before You Move to Houston

All My Sons Moving & Storage in Texas

Right after making the decision to move to Houston, you're going down a moving checklist of tasks to complete before moving day. Tasks on the checklist may include booking our Texas moving company to help you relocate, making final payments on the new home, scheduling a Wi-Fi installation, and so on. However, what should be at the top of your moving checklist is figuring out who to notify when moving. Not doing so can lead to a pause in mail delivery and home services. Our Houston movers can tell you which important documents to update before you move.

The Local Post Office

This should be a no-brainer as this is the very place where you receive all your mail. About a week or two before the big move, head over to your local post office to fill out a “change of address” form or go online from home to the United States Postal Service website1 to update your address. The process will have mail forwarded to the new address for up to 12 months, giving you more than enough time to find who to notify when moving.

Social Security Administration

Next on your moving checklist of important documents to update before you move is the SSA. If you receive benefits or letters from the administration, change your address through your personal my Social Security account online or give them a call at (800) 772-1213.

Utility Companies

After the SSA, contact the appropriate utility companies to notify them of your upcoming move. The last thing you want is to arrive at the new home with no electricity, gas, nor water service activated. About two weeks before your moving day, call the utility companies to schedule cancellation of services for the old address to avoid being charged extra. Afterwards, schedule a service activation for the new address to ensure you'll have utilities active upon your arrival.

Your Boss

Of course, you may not think to let your employer know of your move to Houston since you most likely receive paychecks via direct deposit. However, you should update your address with your employer to ensure tax forms and pays stubs are sent to the correct residence.

Loved Ones

Of all the places to notify of your move to Houston, you can't forget about the old gang. Let your friends and family know of your move to Houston by sharing the new address to enter into their GPS system for whenever they want to visit. Sharing your new address with friends and family also means that they can send gifts and other important items to the correct residence.
